Your Facebook Questions Answered- Part II

At our last High Stakes Mastermind Group session, a few more Facebook questions came up. I love researching, so here are the answers to the best of my knowledge.
Now on to the questions:
1. How often does Facebook change its instruction book?

This is a great question, and important for us in our Business Mastermind. I’m making the assumption here that instruction book means algorithm. Based on the article, “Facebook Newsfeed Algorithm History” which has all of the updates since 2006, Facebook makes small updates several times a year. From a general perspective, the updates work to increase user engagement and authenticity across the platform. Recent updates have been to: verify news sources, remove click bait, and focus on personal interaction between users.

While Facebook is constantly making changes, it is still a valuable resource for businesses and marketers to use. It may just take some time to figure out the new layout.

2. Would it help if we “like” each other’s Facebook pages and interact with them?

Yes, it would be a great first step to “like” each other’s Facebook pages. To make sure that all of the posts are seen, under Notifications on the professional pages select “All Posts”. When All Posts are selected, you will be able to see all posts.

While “liking” the pages is a good starting point, it would be even better to share Facebook posts and comment on those posts. Sharing and commenting drives engagement which moves the posts higher up the News Feed.

3. Tell me more about Facebook advertisements. Can you customize them or target to different audiences?

Yes. What is great about Facebook, is that users voluntarily provide demographic information about themselves which can be used for marketing purposes. When developing Facebook advertisements, you can create custom audiences to receive your advertisements. These are created by uploading your current contact and lead lists. Facebook also allows for “Lookalike Audiences” who allow you to create an advertisement audience based off the custom audience. The article, “5 Ridiculously Powerful Facebook Ad Targeting Strategies”, outlines more about advertising with Facebook.

4. What is the average dollar output for targeted advertisements based on various breakdowns with size, reach, etc?
Facebook has a great help section all about advertisements here. Unfortunately, there is no one figure on the average dollar output for targeted advertisements, but according to the AdEspresso article “The Complete Resource to Understanding Facebook Ads Cost -2016 Benchmarks” the average cost per click for Q3 2016 was 27.29 cents and the cost per 1000 impressions was $7.19.
If you decide to use Facebook advertisements, you can select the budget you are willing to spend to run your advertisement. With that budget in mind, Facebook advertisement costs are also dependent on the following factors: the targeted audience (the more competitive the audience, the more the advertisement may cost), the quality of the advertisement (the relevance to the target audience), and the time of year (holiday seasons for example have higher advertisement costs).
5. Is Instagram or Facebook used to validate and hire a professional?
Having strong Instagram and Facebook pages are definitely used when looking to hire a professional. It is always a good idea for small businesses to invest in strong social media presences, because it is a way to affordably display the product or service. Facebook is a great tool, as its reach is huge, and depending on your business, Instagram can also be tremendously beneficial. Artistic professional or service businesses are a good fit for Instagram.
When using Instagram or Facebook, some ideas for marketing your business are to: demonstrate your product or service, go behind the scenes of your product (make it personable), include the whole team, and have your customers show off your work. For us, this is valuable in our peer advisory group.
6. Are advertisements useful or beneficial for service based businesses?

Facebook advertisements can be useful for service based businesses. Based on several articles, including “Choosing the Right Facebook Ad Types for Your Business” by Disruptive Advertising, Facebook advertisements can be a great form of lead generation for service businesses on Facebook. One way to craft this lead generation is provide useful information for the Facebook user that they can only access by providing their email. With this email, the service based business can now interact with a potential client.

7. What type of content is most appealing to potential clients? Company culture? Service based deals?

Both. Although that doesn’t narrow down the content scope, for Facebook business pages, a mixture of both company culture and service based deals can round out the picture for potential clients. When thinking about your overall content for Facebook, the most important aspect is to make your content engaging. The more discussion on the content, the more likely it is to be visible in potential user’s news feeds.

Handling “Stuckness”

A few years ago, I started to feel stuck. I didn’t just wake up one morning and feel stuck, but rather it snuck up on me slowly. Since it felt like more of a professional “stuckness”, I started frantically applying for jobs, looking for classes, and haphazardly trying to change my professional world. I wasted a lot of money, and ended up feeling a little burnt out before I found my right direction.

I learned some valuable lessons on feeling stuck and how to handle “stuckness”. Here are the suggestions I would give to myself in the future.

  1. Assess the current situation:

For me at least, feeling stuck drives from not being challenged. Instead of making a drastic movement to get out of “stuckness”, take a minute and review the situation. Talk about it with a friend, co-worker, or fellow High Stakes Mastermind Group member. Is there a new role or challenge that I can be taking? Can I find a new niche within what I am doing that will give me the challenge? Sometimes, it just takes a little thinking outside the box to find a new opportunity to get unstuck.

  1. Complete some outside of work training:
    While I would like to think I get my entire professional fulfillment from work, this isn’t true. In the future, I would look for classes to take to broaden my career knowledge or personal interests. There are opportunities through Skillshare.com (including those taught by High Stakes Mastermind Group leader, Stephanie Angelo), Coursera.com, local community college classes, and even webinars online. Not only could I have continued to develop myself professionally, but I may have found personal fulfillment in the training.
  2. Research, Research, Research:
    I sound like my music instructor from my childhood (practice, practice, practice), but I can’t stress more the importance of research. If you decide to change roles or the way you structure your business, read about the benefits and implications. Make sure it is a good fit, before jumping.
  3. Step away:
    One of the best things for me when I feel stuck is to step away from the situation. I don’t mean to completely avoid it, but instead I try to stop focusing on it. Stepping away for a short break provides me with clarity, and allows me to think clearly. Instead of feeling like I must fix the problem, I am able to make sure I know what I need. Again, speaking with a friend, co-worker, or your fellow High Stakes Mastermind participant may provide you with a new perspective.
  4. Make a plan of action:
    Instead of acting in panic mode, slowly and carefully make a plan of action. I don’t know of any situations that have been well handled in a reactionary state. Draft up a goal plan (like we do in our High Stakes Mastermind Group) and make logical steps to complete those goals. Either have your High Stakes Mastermind Group hold you accountable or a friend or co-worker can keep you accountable to your new action plan.
  5. Give yourself grace:
    If in the end, if you take what you believe to be a well considered leap, and it doesn’t work out, give yourself grace. Everyone makes mistakes, I firmly believe it is better to try something new (and later find out it was not right) than to live in constant fear of not making the right choice. I would rather learn my decision did not completely meet my needs than to live in a state of “if only”.

Master Mind Reader – What’s the Real Magic Behind Masterminds?

Can You Read My Mind?

Here’s a little personal information, mind you. My husband and I use a laundry basket, which is in our closet, but he also has a large laundry bag that he hangs behind the closet door. In it he puts his extra dirty, grimy, clothes that we don’t want mixed with our better clothing in the laundry basket.

Last Saturday after I started the extra dirty laundry from his bag, he got upset with me because I had “forgotten” a pair of his socks and some shorts. “Where were they?” I asked him.  “They were in my cabinet.” I asked, “How was I supposed to know they were in there?”  He said, “I always have my last things from the day before in the cabinet and I put them in the bag on Saturday morning.”

Well, this was news to me. I asked him, “I have I ever seen you do that?” knowing perfectly well the answer was ‘no’.  He said, “I don’t know.” I asked, “How was I supposed to know that you do that then?”  His answer, “Well I do it every weekend.”  “Do you know what I use to separate my eyelashes every morning after I put on mascara?”   “No, how would I know? I’m not clairvoyant.”

“Well, I said, “I do it every day.”  I know perfectly well he’s never seen me do it.

So here we have a problem of somebody expecting another person to have extrasensory perception (ESP).  I don’t have it.  I facilitate Mastermind Groups – I am not a master at reading minds.

The same is true of your Mastermind members. They aren’t Fortune-Tellers. You have to explain what your goals are and what you’re trying to achieve. Only after you are open and verbal about it can your fellow Mastermind group members actually help you. If a member doesn’t have ability to speak, then a written/printed form is used.  In either case, your fellow Mastermind Group members can’t read your mind. They don’t know what you need. Only if you are open and honest and willing to have a discussion help is there to be had.

It’s really up to you how good of a Mastermind Group participant you are. The group is not there to solve all your problems. The group isn’t there to do the work for you. Studies have shown that people who are in Mastermind Groups and put as much into the group as they expect to get out of it are 15% more likely to accomplish their goals than people who are not in a mastermind group.

Goals have a way of falling apart when you don’t have someone to hold you accountable. When nobody is looking, you may take it easier on yourself. Nobody is watching, you think, so if you fail, it’s not a big deal.

Mastermind groups are like having your own Board of Directors. Except you’re not obligated to do what they tell you – they exist for you. That’s the truly cool part. It’s not just having one accountability partner, but many. They offer you professional relationships where the members support, empower and hold each other accountable for their actions. That is the way that members help each other to achieve their specific goals by coming up with thoughtful, useful and timely information that will add value to the lives and careers of group members.

As a member, you’re being backed by and collaborating with some of the strongest, smartest and best thinkers and leaders out there – the people in some of the top leader and executive roles available. Not only are they helping you by feeding your mind with positive energy and fuel to reach your goals, but you’re helping them, as well.  Some people think, “I have nothing to contribute.  These people are way more accomplished than I am”. Well, allow me to stop you right there.  Everyone has something of value to give, over and over again.  We’ll even empower you to contribute- because it’s the cornerstone of your own accountability. Through accountability we help you master your goals. That’s where the real magic is.

High Stakes Mastermind Groups

Who Knew? My Mother Would be Proud of Me for These Collaborations!

At the first High Stakes Mastermind Group’s social event, a happy hour, I personally invited people I thought would be excellent members of the groups to meet some of the current members who are known for their collaborations and teamwork approach mindsets.  We had such a blast that evening so we stayed at the venue well past the ending time of the event.  But the conversations and connections were just too good to cut short.

I predicted certain invitees would really hit it off with others.  Sure enough, not only were the social connections and collaborations immediate, but right in front of me business deals were made.  I knew it!  In other words, that evening went above and beyond just the social event it was intended to be.  I mean, the instant teamwork was really inspirational!

Looking back before that event and forward from the days since then, many more such business deals have generated.  Click, click, click.  That easily.  I discovered something about myself that I even mentioned in a Tweet and Facebook update; I’m very skillful at creating collaborations and relationships that get results.

Do I feel funny about “blowing my own horn”? Nope!  Here’s why- because it benefits other people.  It’s a tremendous feeling to put two or more people together and see them both gain and achieve business and personal goals as a result.  That’s what High Stakes Masterminds is founded on.

High Stakes Mastermind groups are for masterminding. We are not a networking group. Although, of course, close trusted relationships develop.  And the members of the Mastermind groups tend to do more business with one another than anybody else they meet through a networking group. They get to know each other on a more intimate and confidential basis and so they trust one another, do business with one another, and refer one another. Not because they have to, like a BNI group, but because they choose to.

Our Physician used one of the retailer members for specialty products.  The marketer has done projects for other members.  The restaurant owner’s venues will provide locations for our events.  The relator and interior designer make for cross referrals as they are auxiliary businesses.

This contributes to people who are members of Mastermind groups growing their businesses as at a rate 15% higher than people who are not in Mastermind groups.

Improve Your Masterminding Made Simple: It’s about seeing the bigger picture.

Don’t you agree; people have an interesting habit?  Maybe it comes from ego or their sense of self-esteem but they feel like they have to do everything themselves and that not doing everything by themselves as a sign of weakness. But the contrary is really the truth.  Strong people know how to ask for help. They know how, when and where to seek help and know that it’s a sign of strength to recognize your own limitations. Really we cannot do everything all by ourselves.  Somethings gonna give.  It’s called resourcefulness.  We call it Masterminding.

That’s where masterminding comes in.  It’s the collaboration of like-minded individuals.  It’s also the collaboration of non-likeminded individuals.  You don’t want to get too homogenized or stagnant.  You want people with a breadth of expertise and experience. That’s how we build our businesses and not just do the business.

The really interesting thing is that sometimes we are so close to our own situation that we don’t see what’s right in front of us.  We miss really important and valuable pieces of information as a result.  For example, in one of my groups an individual was talking about trying to keep in contact with a potential client that she’s trying to secure and she wants to come up with interesting newsfeeds and magazine articles to send him for periodic “touches”.   One thing she had completely missed was the fact that her targeted company now has a new subsidiary.  While she knew this new subsidiary was just launched, she had completely forgotten the value of saying something about it to this potential client.  Another member had to mention it as a “Why don’t you write to him about their new subsidiary…?”

Masterminding is so powerful because other people who are not so close to your situation see the things that are seemingly obvious but yet to those of us that are deeply rooted in a situation often don’t see for ourselves. It’s about seeing the bigger picture. Wouldn’t you like to have several more sets of eyes? Wouldn’t you like to have several more brains adding their powerful thoughts to your business?

To improve your mastermind time even more here are a few tips:

  • Prior to the meeting prepare shorts notes of what to ask your group members what you need from them.
  • Think about the current issues in your business or goals timeline. Choose just the most salient points you need addressed.
  • Prepare a couple questions around those points.
  • Open your mind to seeing the bigger picture.
  • Listen and take notes.
